Ally’s Thoughts: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018)

Hi everyone,

I just finished watching The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on Netflix. I added it on My List for quite some times. Only now I have the feel to watch it. I am glad not a second wasted on this movie.

The movie is based on a novel with the same title written by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows that was published in 2008.

The movie is about Juliet, a writer from London received a letter from a book club in Guernsey called The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Yes, it’s a mouthful one indeed but there are circumstances. Led by curiosity, Juliet went to Guernsey to uncover the truth behind the book club.

As usual in Ally’s Thoughts segment, this is not a review of a movie but more on sharing few points and perspective that really caught my attention in the movie. There might be few spoilers around, if you don’t want to be spoiled, turn around now.

The place we truly belong

Perhaps, not everyone would resonate about it. However, there are people out there that are looking for a place they would call home, family, and longed for familiar connections with the people around them.

Imagine there are so many things going on in your life, suddenly, you feel that the thing that is happening to you feels so distant. While you have accomplished so much, yet, you still feel something missing.

That thought made you wonder and ponder, made you searched to understand. You are looking for an answer, no mediocre ones can really satisfy you. While everyone around you tried to convince you otherwise, you kept on and believe in the voices of your heart.

I believe that is what Juliet has experienced. She was not ready to settle in her current state. She still couldn’t get off her pasts and searching for something to give her strength to move on. She found a reason when she received the letter from Dawsey.

She was probably doubting herself a lot before making that decision. To step out and look for something. Driven by her curiosity and guts. She couldn’t let go. This was shown many times in the movie.

Even when there were resistance directly telling her to stop and carry on from the book club. She stayed in Gurnsey and building deeper connection with the club members. Her strong feeling keeps on guiding her to stay for the sake of uncovering the truth. In the end, she uncovered the truth about the club and the truth about herself. The truth about what she strongly believed.

I believe that there are plenty of times in my life, I tried to be rational about things. There are times when I decide to ignore my feeling and live up to the standard norm. Nothing wrong with that, the decisions were made by myself. There are no points in regretting them.

However, there are plenty of time as well that some decisions left my feeling to voice out louder. The feeling went so intense that I can’t ignore. Later, the feeling won over my rational decision.

Perhaps that was the decision that we truly belonged. Like there are forces that intervened and brought out new perspectives.

There are so many quotes from the movie I wished to share but there are not many available in the web. Even so, I would really love to share this one.

Such a small thing, just a book. Yet, it brought me all this way.

Juliet

There are times when the smallest thing in our life made us brace ourselves and brought out the courage inside us. Some may be insignificant to others but to us, it leads us to the place we truly belong.

Now, I really need to find the book and read it. That is how it usually happened to me. Movies first, then the books.

This Is All About Desire And Selfishness – Story 1

Book of Desire.png

I couldn’t rest myself. My mind keep wondering about her. My curiosity feels like an endless hunger that can’t be satisfied easily. The phrase ‘I want to know’ repeats over and over again inside my head. I can’t suppress it because the urge is stronger than my will to fight it. It came uninvited and I just let it in.

I decided to just stalk her. First in Facebook, scrolling through her news feed one by one. I feel shocked as I saw a post with picture of her with someone else. A guy. Who is he? Her boyfriend? No, that is not impossible, she is single. A friend? Why you guys are too close? More than friend perhaps? I couldn’t control my mind that keeps spouting vicious assumptions.

Then I read the comments. It feels like thousand of arrows pierced my body endlessly. It hurts so much that it numb. It hurts so much that I can’t feel the pain except this aching heart. Why? Why? Why? You are supposed to be mine? You should be mine! No! You are mine!

Is it because you are just a friend? Is it because I don’t confess? Am I not good enough? You don’t see me as a company? You don’t see me as someone close? Are you blind? Calm down. Calm down. I need to calm down so I can think what should I do next. The more comments I read, it just burn my fury more. Calm down, I told myself.

I know what I should do for now. Ignore this type of post. Let me stalk something else of you. Oh lovely. Her picture, alone with no one else. You look so lovely and sweet, especially with that wonderful smile. I can’t stop falling in love. I am so attracted to you now. You are the only one I need.

I want you. I want you! I want you so much! I just want to spend myself with you all day, forever and ever! The thoughts filled my head and driving me insane. It showed me happiness. True happiness!

[NEW FREE E-BOOK] The Thirty Days by Ally L. Mare

Hi fellow readers and friends!

How is your weekend? I hope everything is fine and lovely!

I have published my third poetry e-book and like the previous two… It is FREE!

The Thirty Days is a compilation of my NaPoWriMo writing this year and it was my first NaPoWriMo experience! I was quite fortunate to be able in completing the challenge.

Some of the prompts  were challenging and definitely not easy to be approached. To be honest, I feel satisfied and happy completing the challenge. I can’t help it  but  to say, I am proud of my work! I hope you guys are proud too on your work!

I know NaPoWriMo was two months ago. I actually completed the book last month but my schedule and motivation doesn’t really mixed well. However, I managed to publish it today!

The Thirty Days by Ally L Mare

NaPoWriMo 2017-

There are pretty much other stuff that has been pending in my work. Something like my Inkitt Novella. Yes, I am caught red handed. I haven’t finished uploading the whole Novella. My only reason would be, I don’t have the privilege of time at the moment. The only thing I can do right now is to complete it one by one.

Anyway, thank you for reading and I hope you guys download and read my new ebook and do leave some rating! I seriously appreciate rating and feedback from all of you.

Ally’s Thoughts: Aleph by Paulo Coelho

wp1.jpg

Hi everyone! How is your day? I hope you guys have a great day!

I would like to thanks Singledust for this amazing book! I visited her last month to let her borrow one of my book but instead, she gave me this book as a gift. Again, thank you!

As usual, when it comes to Ally’s Thoughts, it is not a review but more of a thought. How I feel about books or movies. Usually there would be a certain theme or issue that i want to share my thoughts with.

From Goodreads

Facing a grave crisis of faith, and seeking a path of spiritual renewal and growth, Paulo decides to start over: to travel, to experiment, to reconnect with people and the world. On this journey he will again meet Hilal – the woman he loved 500 years before – an encounter that will initiate a mystical voyage in search of himself.

So, what I want to talk about?

How much do we know about spirituality? By Oxford definition it is the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.

I am a person who believes in spirituality. To me, spirituality is a base that will define the qualities in you. When you have a high spiritual level, you will feel more connected and understand better about the things you believe in. Be it in religion or self discovery level.

In this book, it touches spirituality in various angles such as in self experience, Sufism and different beliefs.

Have you ever think how are you doing in spiritual level? Do you have low spiritual level? Or perhaps high?

I am not sure about myself but I do have spiritual conscious. One for example is that I realized there are bigger things in life than just the things in front of you. To realized that is just a step in a spiritual journey.

What kind of things bigger than the things in front of you?

The first thing would be ourselves. What kind of qualities do we have. Are we being good or bad towards ourselves? How do we perceived life? Are we doing the right things?

If to realize is a step in a spiritual journey, where is the destination? Again, depending on your belief. If you belief in religion, perhaps the journey will take you closer to your Maker. If  you belief in self discovery, perhaps you want to be someone better. I believed that during this journey, you will experience different things.

I am in this journey. During my journey, I experienced a lot. From the feel of calmness to the point of self destruction. Some are straightforward but some are the things you can’t even explain logically. The only best possible answer would be coincidence but I don’t believe in coincidence. My journey made me learn that there are no coincidence, everything happened for a reason and it is totally up to me to find the reason or not.

Like the book for example, the journey of Paulo, Hilal and Yao took them to different destination but they embarked the same journey. I’m not sharing more than that because if you are interested, you need to read it for yourself.

You can find yourself doing the things you like to define you but you need to be in touch with your spirit to know who you really are.

Also, this book actually have its official song!

For those who are not familiar Pulitzer Prize, it is an award for achievement in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature and musical composition in United States. It was established by provisions in the will of Joseph Pulitzer.

The date for this year Pulitzer Prize was 10th April 2017 and the winner for poetry category is Olio by Tyehimba Jess.

If you want to read more about the award and more poems from Tyehimba Jess. You can read more here.

BUSTLE

Joining the 101st class of Pulitzer Prize winners is Tyehimba Jess with his book, Olio. In two books, Jess, a writer from Detroit, has married poetry with history and music, giving voice to the formative names in Blues and folk music. His work is expansive and formal, slangy and genre-bending, the sort of poetry you can share with poetry and non-poetry readers alike. Now that you’ve ordered your copy of Olio (you’ve done that, right?), you’ll want to nerd out on the best of Jess.

Ally’s Thoughts: Ali And Nino (2016)

Hi, everyone!

I recently watched a movie called Ali And Nino. It is a book adaptation with the same title by Kurban Said. The book was first published in 1937 and the book has been translated more than 30 languages.

The plot simply described by IMDB as,

Love story of a Muslim Azerbaijani boy and Christian Georgian girl in Baku from 1918 to 1920.

Simple and neat!

If this is your first time reading Ally’s Thoughts, do not worry about spoilers because I don’t really give away spoilers. If you can’t trust me, please avoid reading.

If you are an adventurous reader, you will surely understand why I enjoy this movie so much.

So, let’s start.

When it comes to love story we all know how romantic and disastrous it can be, depending on how the plot goes. By the simplified plot description above, it is about intercultural love. This is the main reason why I decided to watch it. Other reason would be the setting of the story. The story sets in 1918 which you might say a time of war and turbulence.

For a romantic drama, some might look for the happy ending and some might want to see some twist at the end of the movie. I am looking for something else. I’m looking for the progress in the movie.

What happened in the beginning of the story? What kind of choices did they make? What kind of conflicts are they having? Did they settle things in the most cliche ways? How the characters react to an event? These are the things I’m looking for.

So, what is the thing that made me really enjoy Ali and Nino?

My answer would be, the journey.

This movie will take you on a journey of diverse culture, ethnic, religion, landscape and history.

Imagine you fall in love with someone that you know your parents will never accept. Then, the world throw wars at you. Just to add the flavor in the plot, you have dreams to achieve. How complicated that would be? Will you changed? Will you be put to your knee when it tests you?

It can be complicated but that is the jewel of the movie. The journey they took to the amazing colors, architectures, complex politics, cultural differences and the nature of war.

It made me understand a little about their way of life back then. In some part, the way of life is still practiced today. I am totally at awe with these elements.

I would like to share a dialogue that I really enjoy.

Nino: Will you marry a fallen woman?
Ali: Are you ready to stay in this hut forever?

What is a fallen women? Why they need to get used living in the hut? You need to watch it for yourself.

As for now, I will be looking for the book. Hopefully it will be available in major international bookstores here. My finger is crossed.

I would recommend this movie to someone who enjoy romance and drama. One who have eyes in culture. Also, bored people that don’t know how to spend their time.

I wish everyone have a great and lovely day ahead!

*Some quick fact: My name can be read as Ali too and perhaps that is my name? Shhh…

Ally’s Novella And Where To Read Them

mull.png

Hi everyone!

March 2017 is leaving and we will be welcoming April 2017 soon. In my case, less than two hours from the time this post has been published.

A quick recap about this month. It’s actually not the main point about this post, but I feel the need to share it with you all.

I’m proud to share my top post of the month!

Do check them out if you missed them earlier. That’s done for the recap.

Now the main announcement I wanted to share with you guys.

I’ve been keeping a secret from all of you. Well, some of you actually because they are my early readers and I really appreciate the feedback! You know who you are!

So what is the secret? From the title it is obviously a dead giveaway. I wrote a novella. I wrote it last year and managed to complete it by the end of 2016. After that, I’ve been doing some editing and getting feedback from my fantastic readers! I really appreciate it!

After some crazy mentally and physically exhausting editing, I’m ready to show it to the rest of the world! And of course, to my fellow readers and friends! Even so, I have not uploaded all the chapters but don’t panic because I will upload them all next month. Hopefully, it does not take a long time.

The only problem would be, I’m procrastinating or I have internet problem. I can’t give ‘not enough time’ as a reason because I’m practically have all the time I need. Even so, I tend to keep my promises.

So where to read them?

Basically, I’m using Inkitt as my platform instead of other available platform such as Wattpad. Why? Simply because, I am exposed to Inkitt first rather than Wattpad and I’m somehow grow fond of Inkitt.

You can find the link to my story here.

My Unsent Love Letters – Ally L Mare

Inkitt is also available to download in the App Store and Google Play. Just in case you don’t want to read my story, you can read stories by others. Some advice, they are very good and some of them has been published by Inkitt and last year it was listed in Top 100 in Amazon.

Well, that is all for now. I wish you guys have a great month of April! And trust me, this is not a prank.
